Signs Of A Poor Waterproofing Job
It is easy to see the signs of a poor waterproofing job.
This is called efflorescence. In the language of construction professionals, efflorescence is defined as being a large accumulation of salts and calcium crystals, which causes serious disfigurement to the edges, underside, and top of masonry.
This efflorescence condition needs the presence of water in order to form. Waterproofing a balcony floor is necessary to prevent this from occuring.
This means that this problem is focused only on the external surfaces that are exposed to the rain or also surfaces that may be vulnerable to any moisture that may be leaching into the tile from another source, like groundwater or water from planter boxes or a hot tube.
Reducing Efflorescence
There are two main principles that are important to the minimization of efflorescence.
The first principle is to minimize the water that is getting into the tile system.
There are two effective methods that will limit the water from entering the tile screed:
- Applying strong waterproofing membrane on both sides of the screed.
- Sealing the tiles’ surfaces and the grout joints with a water repellent.
The second principle is that the water entering the tiling system must be directed into a specially designed outlet to get it off of the tile in as quick a fashion as reasonably possible.
The keys to this waterproofing balcony tile strategy are waterproofing membranes.
How To Direct Water To An Outlet
To direct water to an outlet, it is necessary to make sure that positive falls exist within the substrate before applying any sort of waterproofing membrane.
Substrate falls shouldn’t be able to go to free drains without a gutter to collect the salty water.
A water-sot angle should be installed. This is a ninety-degree-angled extrusion that is sealed to the surface of the waterproofing system. It ensures that the water will be properly contained and directed.
Waterproofing balcony tile is something that can be done without any professional involvement, but it must be done well to prevent the occurrence of efflorescence and the continued destruction of the tiling system that is caused by the unwanted and unstoppable water damage.
